Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) scan is a painless, non-invasive test that assesses an individual's likelihood of experiencing a bone fracture and aids in the identification of osteoporosis.

Before:

  • BMD tests are straightforward, quick, and painless, requiring virtually no preparation.
  • Inform us if you've recently had a barium exam or received contrast material for a CT scan or nuclear medicine test, as these materials may affect your bone density test.
  • Refrain from taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before the test.
  • Remove jewellery and metal objects.
  • Notify the staff if you have any metallic implants in your spine or hip.
  • Female patients should inform the staff if they are pregnant or suspect they might be.

During:

  • You will lie on a padded examination couch with your ankles secured to a positioning device.
  • A mechanical arm will pass over your body during the scan.
  • You will not feel anything during the scan, and the radiation exposure is minimal.
  • The scan typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes.

After:

  • You may resume normal activities.

Pre-Screening:

Fasting may be required 4 to 6 hours before, specifically for blood tests, abdomen, and liver ultrasound.

You may drink water during this fasting period. It is advisable to drink clear liquids, and you can continue taking your prescribed medications (except for anti-diabetic medication) before the scan.

If you are feeling unwell on the day of your screening, we will assist you to reschedule your appointment at your convenience. This is because overall fitness and medication such as antibiotics may affect your screening results.

Day Of Appointment:

Please bring along the following:

  • Identification documents for registration
  • Past medical reports and radiology films and/or reports

When registering, you can opt to include add-ons as supplementary components to your health screening programme.

Once you are registered, you will be scheduled for a blood test, diagnostic imaging test, clinical examination, and a consultation with a doctor.

The entire screening process may take 2 to 4 hours, depending on the package selected.

Light refreshment will be provided after the screening.

Urine Collection

  • Clean your hands thoroughly and use tissue paper to wipe your genital area.
  • Hold the specimen bottle without touching the inside.
  • Start urinating into the toilet bowl. After a few seconds, while continuing urination, position the specimen bottle in the urine stream to collect urine directly until it is half-full.
  • Securely fasten the cap onto the specimen bottle and place it in the provided Ziploc bag.
Post-Screening:

  • Results will usually be ready in 24 hours or more, contingent on which tests you have undergone.
  • We will schedule an appointment for a one-on-one review with our physician, who will go over your results and offer personalised recommendations tailored to your requirements.
